Outdoor experiences for everyone

Black-owned outfitter hopes to make all feel welcome in the wilderness

By Johnny Burkin

The heart of football lies in the trenches. This is where the game is most physical and, oftentimes, where the outcome is decided.

Wanderland owners Bobby and Angel Massie

For former Denver Bronco Bobby Massie, who spent a decade in the NFL protecting quarterbacks and opening up running lanes for ball carriers, the battles in the trenches are all too familiar territory.

But now, transitioning to life off the field, the former pro, along with his wife Angel Massie, are launching Wanderland Outdoors, a luxury outfitter that focuses on inclusivity and creating a culturally competent outdoor experience. It is a venture that was born out of the Massies’ shared love of nature.

“Being in nature has been a healing place for me," Bobby Massie says. “Stepping foot into the woods or being by a body of water makes you forget the stress of everyday life. Noticing the vibrant colors of leaves and flowers, and just watching wildlife in its natural habitat makes my soul smile.”

Wanderland Outdoors kicked off its inaugural season in early May, offering guests a variety of experiences from guided horseback rides to fly fishing trips and mindfulness hikes. Culinary enthusiasts can also take their palates on an adventure by booking the Food xFire package as Bobby Massie throws on his chef hat to prepare a three-course gourmet dinner surrounded by the beauty of the Arkansas River and majestic Rockies.

While having a passion for the outdoors was a major driving force behind the decision to found Wanderland Outdoors, so was the couple's previous experiences with other outfitters. As Angel Massie notes, some outfitters just did not meet their expectations.

“Wanderland Outdoors was founded not just because we have a love for the outdoors,” says the former producer and reporter for Black Entertainment Television. “It’s because we had several experiences where we went to outfitters, and we just didn’t feel a sense of welcome, or accommodation. We didn’t feel the guide was interested in creating a good experience.”

With Wanderland Outdoors, the aim is to build a more inclusive and accessible environment for their guests. A big part of that includes advancing the experience for people of color.

“Outdoors spaces, everywhere from national parks to community pools, were historically closed off to black and brown folks,” Bobby Massie says. “Because of that, there’s a weariness to recreate in the outdoors when it comes to those communities. We strive to help correct that injustice, and create a safe space for all to reconnect with nature. Everyone should be able to enjoy the beauty that God has placed here for us.”

Indeed, the natural world is a place where everyone should feel welcome. And it is important to encourage those who have felt marginalized to get out and explore all its splendor. Fundamentally, this reflects what is at the core of Wanderland’s approach: cultivating positive experiences.

“Our hope for Wanderland is that we fulfill every need our client could possibly have," Bobby Massie says. “To make the time they spend with us memorable and personalized, with the expert knowledge of our guides, and the attention to detail of our staff. Our clients should see and feel our passion for the outdoors and love for hospitality. We aim to grow and build off the success we have every year. To take notes from our clients, and staff, and put that awareness into evaluating our experiences every season.”

In addition to contributing to Thirst Colorado, Johnny Burkin writes screenplays and breaks down the possibility of the Denver Nuggets repeating as NBA champs.
