The quick jaunt from Denver to Black Hawk is less than an hour, but the former mining town is worth the drive regardless of one's starting point.

Here are some great ways to spend 24 hours any time in 2024. Check back for more suggested quick trips in Colorado and neighboring states, or sign up for our newsletter to never miss a story. You can also email me with destination ideas.

While deep veins of gold and silver are no longer plentiful in the nearby hills, folks still flock to the little town every day with dreams of striking it rich. In recent years, the city’s leaders have wagered that visitor interests extend beyond the table games and slots. Think food, drinks, outdoor recreation and the arts. As part of our 24 in ‘24 series, we’ll highlight a few favorites.

Where to stay

Large hotels, B&Bs, campgrounds and RV sites are available for any type of overnight adventure. The Ameristar Black Hawk, the Monarch Casino Resort Spa and the Lodge Casino are great examples of luxury locations offering all of the amenities if some pampering is on the agenda.

Where to drink

Enjoying locally made beer and spirits is easy because most casinos carry Colorado products. However, stop into the Dostal Alley Casino & Brewpub for freshly crafted brews and great pizza. It’s up the street in Central City but worth the few minutes’ drive.

Where to eat

Bistro Mariposa provides an elevated Mexican/Latin food experience in a relaxed setting that feels like it belongs in the Rocky Mountains. Based in the Monarch Casino Resort Spa, the menu is varied and includes market fish, fajitas, peppery chicken dishes, steak and a tasty veggie dish featuring aji amarillo paste.

“I draw inspiration from engaging conversations with patrons, observing their preferences, and understanding their culinary inclinations,” says executive chef Alex Lopez. “Conversing with my guests and keenly observing their tastes, I am able to creatively craft dishes that resonate with their preferences.”

And don’t be surprised if chef Lopez, whose kitchen expertise was inspired by his grandmother, stops by for a quick visit during your meal.

Where to enjoy performing arts

If visiting between June 29 and Aug. 4, plan ahead and purchase tickets to the Central City Opera. The opera company launched in 1932 and is one of the oldest in the U.S. This year’s lineup includes: “The Pirates of Penzance,” “The Girl of the Golden West” and “Street Scene.” The historic theater and the surrounding mountains make for a fun day of stepping back in time while breathing fresh air at 8,500 feet in elevation.

Where to enjoy the outdoors

The Maryland Mountain Quartz Valley Open Space Park is just a few miles north of Black Hawk. It features the Hidden Treasure Trailhead. The beauty of the park - in addition to its natural beauty - is a trail system that accommodates those looking for a quick walk as well as those planning a morning of intense mountain biking. There are miles of trails zig-zagging up the mountain and a trail map should be downloaded before heading up. Spend 30 minutes walking the Historic Gilpin Tramway Trail with little elevation gain. Or, gear up for the Summit Trail that ascends about 1,000 feet while covering 1.3 miles, one way.
