Far East Center celebrates coming Year of the Dragon through mid-February

By Jay McKinney

Welcoming the new year is a time to celebrate and start fresh. Whether it's committing to more exercise, eating healthier or learning a new skill, it seems like everyone has a new year’s resolution that they hold onto for as long as possible. Those still searching for a resolution, may find inspiration at the 2024 Lunar New Year Initiative located at the Far East Center in Denver.

Throughout January and February, the Lunar New Year Initiative will be offering an abundance of cultural experiences to start the Year of the Dragon off the right way. Regardless of cultural background, everyone is welcome to celebrate and learn more about the cultural traditions of the Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community.

“The Year of the Dragon Initiative is not just an event—it's about bringing our community together,” says Far East Center Event Organizer, Mimi Luong. “We're teaming up with small business owners, groups, chefs and artists to give everyone a taste of our culture. I hope this initiative sparks a love for learning in our community and shows the younger crowd that there's always something cool to discover."

Jan. 2-6 is arts and crafts week, in which visitors can take part in dragon painting, lantern making and lucky paper cutting. Next on the schedule is the immersive stories week that will run from Jan. 7-13 and features a Kung Fu dumpling class and acrobatic performances as primary attractions.

For people hoping to enhance their physical and mental wellbeing in 2024, check out the holistic health, mind and body week from Jan. 14-20.  Learn the basics of Tai Chi, Qigong and Chinese medicine with expert-led seminars and hands-on workshops. During this week visitors can also participate in a variety of martial arts classes.

Foodies will want to mark their calendar for the Asian culinary traditions week running from Jan. 21-27 where renowned local chefs will be providing cooking demonstrations and educating guests about the delicious flavors of asian cuisine. Following the culinary traditions week is the Asian traditions and culture week from Jan. 28-Feb. 3.

Running Feb. 1-9 is a holiday market and most importantly, the Year of the Dragon Lunar New Year celebration on Feb. 10 and 11. The final two weeks of February will feature the return of the most popular classes.

“Whether you're curious about our cultural traditions, looking forward to tasting some amazing Lunar New Year treats, or getting hands-on with workshops, there's something here for you,” Luong says. “Let's come together as a community, share some laughs, and celebrate the Year of the Dragon with open hearts and good times!”

While most of the events are free, space is limited so visitors are advised to register here.
