Comedy, throwbacks and ancient brews in the Colorado beer scene

Celebrate National Beer Day with an Ancient Beer

Colorado Pint Day and National Beer Day have arrived (April 7) and one brewery is offering some unique beers to celebrate the beer holidays.  Seedstock Brewery, located on West Colfax, specializes in brewing historical beers that you might be unfamiliar with. Utilizing recipes that date back to the 1500s, Seedstock offers beers such as horner, fredersdorfer, broyhan, polotmavy, gruit and others that are rare in the U.S. Two of the brewery’s current draft highlights are the Baltic Porter and Kellerbier and if you purchase one on Pint Day, you will receive the limited edition pint glass.

Sanitas Brewing Company Dominates Reputable Competition

Boulder’s Sanitas Brewing Company has been a popular player in the Colorado craft beer scene ever since it opened in 2013, but now the brewery can safely boast after being named the 2021 Colorado Ale Brewery of the Year. Entering the New York International Beer Competition for the first time, the brewery also had two of their beers win medals, with the Passion Fruit Sour taking home Silver, while the Black IPA was awarded a bronze medal.

Co-founder Michael Memsic says, “The New York International Beer Competition is one of the most legitimate competitions in the world, so to get two of our bestselling beers to win awards and to be named Colorado Ale Brewery of the Year was awesome.” Memsic says it is exciting to win these awards because it signifies that the changes and improvements they’ve made to their products, is paying off.

In addition to improving the beer, Sanitas Brewing Company was also able to expand their patio space last year to nearly 8,000 square feet, making it the largest outdoor seating space for any brewery in the City of Boulder.

“I think our patio is going to explode this summer because of the improvements we’ve made, and we’re doing even more this year to make it the best patio in Boulder,” Memsic says. “We have a killer staff, great seating and a really cool environment overall.”

Dillon DAM Brews a Throwback

In 2012, the Dillon DAM Brewery brewed a special beer in collaboration with the Denver Art Museum (DAM) and the blockbuster Van Gogh exhibit that our capital city was lucky to host. That beer was the DAM Gogh De Garde, a 6.6% ABV Belgian style farmhouse ale and thankfully, the brewery has brought it back. Brewed with 90% pilsner, 10% wheat, a touch of crystal rye malt and blend of sweet and floral European hops, this beer is both tasty and interesting. To balance out the flavor, the brewers used Belgian yeast and steeped American oak spirals and lemon grass at the end of fermentation making it well worth the throwback. Next time you are in Dillon, stop in and try this beer while it lasts.

Standup Comedy and Good Beer

What’s better than drinking a cold beer with good company? Drinking a cold beer and laughing hysterically with friends and strangers alike. Well guess what, Epic Brewing is teaming up with Rotating Tap Comedy and will host stand-up comedy on the first and third Thursday of every month. The hardships everyone overcame in 2020 were no laughing matter, but let’s put that behind us and enjoy a good laugh with some great beer.

Denver Beer Co. Aims to Buy the Rockies (and support charities)

Baseball season is here, and many Rockies fans find themselves at the crossroads of loyalty and frustration. After years of criticism, shipping away Nolan Arenado may just be the straw that broke Dick Monfort’s back as Denver Beer Co. has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise their goal of $1 billion and buy the Rockies. Yes, you heard that correctly. While it may seem like a lofty, far-fetched goal, Denver Beer co-founder Charlie Berger cited GameStop’s recent financial Cinderella story as proof that anything is possible.

Through May 1, the GoFundMe campaign will be open so all Rockies fans have a chance to buy a piece of the team and make sports history. But even if the goal falls short and no agreement is reached, 100 percent of the funds raised will be donated to local nonprofits.

Berger along with every other Rockies fan, wants to see Denver have a winning baseball team and this is your chance to bring that one step closer to reality.

If the goal falls short, the donated funds will be used to support local nonprofits, helping restaurant and hospitality workers in our community.
