Lucha Libre Events that Throw Down

By Natasha Lovato

Characterized by their colorful masks and high-flying maneuvers, lucha libres certainly know how to put on a show. Be sure to catch a few of the lucha libre events throughout the summer. And be sure to pair up your entertainment with a Colorado craft beer.

Run by the group Lucha Libre & Laughs, you’ll find shows this summer at Ratio BeerworksDenver Taco FestivalBoulder Taco Fest and the group’s home at the Oriental Theater. You can also catch lucha libre-like shows at The Rackhouse, home of C-Squared Ciders and Bierstadt Lagerhaus.

The raucous and dramatic shows bring spectacle, entertainment and all the flare of professional wrestling with the added bonus of some of Denver's best comedians. The commentary is half of the fun. Hosts include comedians with roots in Saturday Night Live, Comedy Central and VICE TV. Sam Tallent, Nathan Lund, Adam Cayton-Holland, Brooks Wheelan, Todd Glass and Bobcat Goldthwait provide the laughs while guests enjoy tacos and craft beer at the event settings.

Ratio has truly embraced the comedy format. In addition to their free Wednesday comedy nights, they are trying to schedule up to three Lucha Libre & Laughs events this summer. “It's one of the most unique and hilarious events in Denver so people absolutely love it,” said Ratio Beerworks Marketing Manager Tristan Chan. “We typically have a packed patio for every show.”

Improvisation is part of the performance at the Boulder and Denver Taco Fests. Sanitas Brewing Co. marketing director Josh Kravetz said the Boulder Taco Fest was the perfect venue for the craziness. “Everyone loves tacos and beer, so of course we had to have the wrestling,” Kravetz said. “This type of stuff happens in other cities, but not Boulder. It’s not something people are used to seeing here. You can expect more wrestling, more tacos and a lot more beer this year.”

Be sure to check out Lucha Libres & Laughs at Ratio on July 16. Another show is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 3. The Denver Taco Festival is set for June 29-30, and the Boulder Taco Fest is on July 27.
