Bluegrass festival returns to Steamboat Springs Feb. 27 to March 1

February 2, 2026 Steve Graham

Now in its 13th year, WinterWonderGrass pairs top-tier bluegrass with skiing, craft libations and subzero dancing

Festival season in Colorado never really ends — even in mid-winter. Snowy ground and subzero air in Steamboat Springs can’t keep bluegrass fans from getting their fix in the fresh air at WinterWonderGrass.

“There could be a blizzard happening while the main stage act is live, and the crowd will be completely full, dancing hard, and hugging their friends,” said festival organizer and founder Scotty Stoughton. “That's the spirit of WinterWonderGrass: a gathering that brings people together, that you keep coming back to year after year.”

This 13th edition of the festival comes to Steamboat Resort from Feb. 27 to March 1. At least 30 artists will play on four stages, including a mountaintop stage at Thunderhead Lodge. Some music sets are in heated tents, but the main stage is outdoors in the elements.

Late-night shows around town, a family-friendly kids’ zone, local food trucks and more also are included. To warm up concertgoers from the inside, the festival also offers free daily drink tastings from more than 15 Colorado craft libations businesses.

“Our focus has always been to deliver experiences that inspire the community, that lead and open doors to adventure, self discovery, and pure joy,” Stoughton said. “It's a place where you never know who you’re gonna see, who you’re gonna meet, who you’re gonna fall in love with. We've actually had a wedding take place at the top of the mountain during WinterWonderGrass.”

Admission is free for children under 12 and seniors over 75. There also are VIP tickets and additional packages that include lift tickets, snowmobile tours, dog sled rides, hot air balloons and hot springs passes.

The top-billed artists this year include The Devil Makes Three, Leftover Salmon and The Infamous Stringdusters. WinterWonderGrass is also a rare chance to see the reunited Elephant Revival. Local favorites the Fretliners, Magoo and the Daniel Rodriguez String Band also are on the bill.

Stoughton said selecting WinterWondergrass artists is a little more complicated than it is for some summer events. Bands must know how to play with cold fingers while also checking their egos.

“First and foremost they need to be willing to perform in the elements, which takes a lot of people out of the equation,” he said. “We hire artists not only for their talent, passion and fan base, but for their authenticity and connection to the community. Our artists often get on the mountain, join a late night jam, mingle in the local coffee shops or wander the crowds.”

Stoughton is less particular about attendees. He said there are only two requirements for attending WinterWondergrass.

“Come dressed for the snow, and be prepared to boogie,” he said.

As for the clothing, he has a few suggestions:

  • Layer up. Dress as you would for a day on the mountain — with added personality

  • Skip cotton; opt for wool or technical fabrics

  • Wear comfortable, weather-ready footwear

  • Bring extra socks (Merino wool recommended)

  • You’ll move frequently between stages, and no one wants to miss a crowd-favorite set because of cold or wet feet. Extra socks = no regrets
