Local artists are in the spotlight at small town event

By Jay McKinney

Nothing brings a community together like an art festival on a beautiful late spring day. Residents of Erie (and elsewhere) are invited to the annual Erie Art Fest, set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 7.

Launched during the Covid-19 pandemic, the event was such a success that it has returned each year since. It’s free to attend and those who visit will be able to shop a wide selection of local art, jewelry and home decor from more than 70 local artists. That blank wall in the living room deserves a facelift and an eye-catching painting from a local artist could satisfy the need.

Kristi Arzola is a watercolor artist and instructor who helped start the festival, alongside fellow artist Peter Buwalda and local realtor Jessica Luginbill. Arzola is passionate about the transformative power of creativity and is on a mission to inspire others to pursue their passions and become creators, not just consumers.

“It was born from a place of hope during the early days of the pandemic — a way to uplift our neighbors, support local makers, and give artists a safe, outdoor space to share their work,” Arzola says. “What began as a small, socially distanced holiday fair has grown into a vibrant seasonal tradition, thanks to the amazing support of our community and the incredible talent of our artists.”

Arzola will be selling originals and prints that show her love for nature, color and storytelling.

Other notable artists who will be showcasing their work at the festival include Jeanette McPherson with Little Wing Jewelry in Niwot, Mason Made Leather with leather goods crafted by Ed Mason and his sons, and Catalena Eskey with Cottage Chip Hand Embroidery.

In addition to the established artists, the event also highlights youth artists and gives them a platform to show their creative talent to a supportive community.

“Erie Art Fest is special because of its heart,” Arzola says. “It’s not just an event — it’s a celebration of community, creativity and connection. Unlike larger commercial festivals, we focus exclusively on handmade goods. Every vendor is a maker. Every product has a story. And every artist is given a platform to shine.”

Those who aren’t in the market for art can still enjoy the event with their friends and families. There will be live music performed by Longmont band Steve and the Cruisers, a bounce house, outdoor yard games, face painting and more.

Visitors should also plan on coming hungry as there will be food trucks, including Lola’s Kitchen, Freshly Laid, The Maine Event and HipPOP.

The rain-or-shine festival will be at 3280 County Road 5, in the Soaring Heights school parking lot.
