Pair whiskey with whiskey barrel firewood this summer

July 16, 2024 Steve Graham

Colorado’s Tincup and Vermont’s WhistlePig collaborated on premium wood bundles

By David Young

What says summer in Colorado more than a nice campfire in the evening with friends and a tall glass of bourbon in hand?

While pairing a whiskey and campfire is as iconic as Colorado and its fourteeners, this season there is a new trend of using wood from old whiskey barrels as firewood for your campfire.

Colorado-based Tincup and Vermont’s WhistlePig have just released limited-edition bourbon barrel firewood. The wood is crafted from the same charred oak whiskey barrels that aged the whiskey you drink.

Having the ability to enjoy a glass of Tincup 10-year bourbon or the new WhistlePig CampStock Wheat Whiskey next to a fire full of wood from the same barrel is a fun, full-circle moment for whiskey enthusiasts.

The new limited-edition Tincup Bourbon Barrel Firewood offers notes of cinnamon, pine, honey, and freshly cut grass when you burn it, similar to the notes you may pick up from a glass of Tincup.

A bundle of the Tincup Bourbon Barrel Firewood sells for $92 online and includes charred oak barrel staves that once aged Tincup Bourbon and locally sourced wood from Denver Firewood.

With the risk of fire danger at times in Colorado, the wood also works great for indoor fires in a fireplace. And with a commitment to leaving Colorado better than you found it while camping this summer, Tincup partnered with Leave No Trace to support the organization with some of the sales from the firewood.

You can’t just chop up a whiskey barrel and burn it—there’s a process involved in preparing the barrel so it will burn well in a campfire. Tincup’s wood is professionally dried at 160-180 degrees Fahrenheit for 48 hours to ensure a high-quality burn in your fire pit.

WhistlePig’s CampStock whiskey launched in May and is intended for chill summer campfire sipping. WhistlePig partnered with Solo Stove, known for its smokeless fire pits, and finished the whiskey in Solo Stove Toasted Barrels. The whiskey has a custom, limited-edition Solo Stove Mesa XL tabletop fire pit designed as a replica of the WhistlePig whiskey barrels.

"At Solo Stove, we're passionate about fostering connections and crafting memorable experiences that ignite around the fire," shared Luana Bumachar, chief marketing officer at Solo Stove in a prepared statement. "This partnership embodies our commitment to bringing people together, infusing the embracing glow of a crackling fire with the bold taste of premium whiskey. It's our invitation to spark conversations, share experiences, and forge enduring connections."
