Craft Drinks Scene Roundup Sept. 27 to Oct. 3

September 27, 2023 Steve Graham

By The Thirst Team

We hope everyone has recovered from the Great American Beer Fest. Kudos again to all the Colorado medal winners. Most of the winning beers still are on tap or available in stores around the state.

Also, a reminder that the Denver Deluxe Festival returns to RiNo on Saturday, with New Belgium beer, Park Burger eats and 11 top-shelf musical acts. Here are all the details.

And here’s our other picks for fun and frolicking in the craft scene this weekend.

Suave Fest

Raices Brewing Co. and Cultura, a local nonprofit, will host the Suave Fest Latino craft beer festival on Saturday at Steam on the Platte. The festival spotlights Latino-owned breweries and aims to elevate Latino culture and businesses.

The event includes samples of more than 40 beers from 18 Latino-owned breweries and 10 other collaborating breweries, as well as more than 50 artists, live entertainment, food and other craft drinks. The entertainment lineup includes Los Mocochetes and Chimbangle, as well as dances and other cultural programming from Venezuelan and Colombian folkloric groups.

Hops Drops in Evergreen

The Hops Drops music and beer festival returns to Buchanan Park in Evergreen from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday. The music lineup includes Little Stranger, Massif, Justus and the Limits and Tatanka. At least 18 breweries and wineries will pour samples from 12 to 4 p.m. Festival only tickets cost $35. Add $20 for the libations tasting. VIP tickets with premium seating and free food are available for $150.

The event raises money for children’s arts programs in Evergreen.

Strings, Ciders & Sours

The Strings, Ciders & Sours festival comes to Breckenridge Friday through Sunday. The festival opens with a VIP cider pairing dinner at 6:30 Friday. On Saturday, a grand tasting from 2 to 6 p.m. includes live bluegrass, food and unlimited samples of sours and ciders from local and national craft breweries. The closing event is a brunch at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Backcountry Tap Room

Upslope brings back one of the most exclusive bars in Colorado on Saturday. The Boulder brewery will host a hike-in pop-up taproom in the backcountry at Winter Park Resort. Check in starts at 9:30 a.m. at the parking lot, then hike about 1.4 miles (with an elevation gain of about 800 feet) to the bar.

The event raises money and awareness for the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.

Telluride Brewing turns 12

Telluride Brewing Co. hosts its 12th anniversary block party from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday on Lawson Hill. Atari Safari will play live music and the brewery will bring back the seasonal OktoberFISH beer.

Fiction turns nine

It’s true. Fiction Brewing Co. in Denver celebrates its 9th birthday starting at noon Saturday, with live music, book-themed anniversary beer blends, ShakesBeer cosplay, selfie station, balloon drop and food from What's Happening Catering. The brewery also will debut new beers in cans and on draft, including two IPAs, two aged Baltic porters, a Kolsch and a brown ale brewed with Boulder Tea Company tea blends. Bookish costumes (authors or characters) encouraged.

Fresh hop fest

Joyride Brewing Co. in Edgewater hosts two parties this weekend. The Oktoberfest street party starts at noon Friday, with live music, games, food trucks and German-style beers.

On Saturday, Joyride will tap a selection of wet-hopped Colorado beers for the 3rd annual Fresh Hop Fest. Other participating breweries include Broken Compass, Burns Family Artisan Ales, Call to Arms, Cohesion, Comrade, FlyteCo, Green Mountain, New Terrain, Odell, Ratio, Station 26, Vail and Weldwerks. The street in front of the brewery will be shut down to host live music, food trucks and more.

Oktoberfest roundup

We are still in peak Oktoberfest season. In addition to the aforementioned Joyride party, these five Oktoberfest parties are on tap this week:

  • Denver’s 14er Brewing hosts an event from noon to midnight Saturday, including a Marzen release, german food, polka music and custom ceramic steins.

  • Elevation Beer Co. in Poncha Springs hosts its second annual Arktoberfest on Sunday, with live polka music, food, and commemorative ceramic steins.

  • LUKI Brewing in Arvada hosts a party from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, with Bavarian pretzels and authentic German mustard, Marzen beers, stein-holding and costume contests, live polka music.

  • Goat Patch Brewing Co. in Colorado Springs has its second annual Oktoberfest from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, with stein hoist and relay race, weiner toss, dog costume contest, German food trucks and live music by the Polkanauts.

  • Hogshead Brewery in north Denver goes German from 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, with a dunkel release and German food truck.

Beer sesquicentennial

Finally, we have to acknowledge one of Colorado’s original craft beers. Coors Banquet beer has grown a lot from its local origins, but has been brewed in Golden for 150 years. The brewery is celebrating the sesquicentennial with a free, family-friendly street fair in downtown Golden, including live entertainment, games, food and beer.

As always, please send us your events and announcements. We’re happy to share them. And enjoy your Colorado craft libations responsibly.
