When is a winery more than a winery?

September 27, 2022 Steve Graham

The upscale chateau at Two Rivers Winery

Stay and play at these happening locations in Colorado wine country and beyond

By Kristen Kuchar

Colorado is home to dozens and dozens of wineries across the state. At each location, you can likely find carefully crafted wine, either made from native grapes or sourced from another region. At many, there will be food to accompany the wine, tours and tastings, a
dog-friendly outdoor space and fun community-driven events, such as live music or yoga. However, there are a handful of wineries that go off the beaten path and offer a totally unique experience. Check out five wineries that have more than just wine on the agenda.

Azura’s art gallery

Browse an art gallery

Azura Cellars & Gallery

For Helen and Ty Gillespie, a passion for art sparked a journey into wine. They built their dream studio and gallery in Paonia that quickly evolved to a winery as well. Described as “an experience beyond the bottle,” this incredibly scenic spot offers a chance to taste wines while browsing the fine art gallery. Try the Yacht Club Red, their signature wine aged in American oak.

Stay in an upscale chateau

Two Rivers Winery

If you’re looking to explore the wineries near Grand Junction, Two Rivers Winery offers a place to stay in addition to their wine. Described as the feel of a French country chateau, there are accommodations on-site.  Depending on the room selected, you’ll find a fireplace, large garden tub and pet-friendly accommodations. Try the Vintner’s Blend, a well-balanced wine combining Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The gardens at Blue Mountain Vineyards

Stroll through an incredible garden

Blue Mountain Vineyards

Blue Mountain Vineyards is home to five acres of vineyards and gardens in Berthoud. The well-maintained garden consists of 600 trees, boasting more than 55 species, and 50 species of shrubs. Guests are able to grab a glass of their favorite wine made on-site and take a stroll to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Sculptures, vibrant blooming flowers and mountain views make it a serene spot for sipping a nice wine. Try Christie’s Blend, a port-style dessert wine with notes of coffee, dark chocolate and raisin.

Ride a horse through the vineyards

Colterris Winery

For a memorable winery experience, Colterris offers an opportunity to saddle up and venture through the Colterris Riverside Vineyards on horseback. A guide from Rhyne Horse Rides escorts the group through the scenic vineyard for one hour, before heading back to the winery courtyard. Guests then receive a reserved tasting of the current releases of wines from the family-owned estate winery. Try the Cabernet Franc, a gold-medal winner with hints of violet and baking spices.

The OBC Wine Project

After 30 years of brewing award-winning beer, Odell Brewing in Fort Collins launched their own winery, The OBC Wine Project next door. This modern winery is described as a wine story told by craft beer makers. On the outdoor patios, you can enjoy either beer or wine, so there’s something for everyone. There is wine on tap, but they also offer their wine in a convenient can. Try the Red Blend, featuring Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with flavors of nutmeg, leather and blackberry jam.
