Immersive, indescribable art installation is highly anticipated

By Jay McKinney

From the first sighting of the architectural wonder wedged between Interstate 25 and West Colfax Avenue to the cryptic messages that have recently popped up across the city, the anticipation of Meow Wolf’s Denver installment will have people lining up to visit when it opens Sept. 17.

The name given to this new tourist attraction is Convergence Station and it is described as “the first stop on a quantum journey of exploration and discovery as passengers traverse new worlds.” For those who’ve never heard of Meow Wolf, it’s difficult to explain exactly what it is. A quick Google search will bring up images of colorful rooms with an other-worldly feel, but they don’t do it justice. Meow Wolf’s exhibits are in the category of experiences that people just have to witness for themselves.

The immersive arts and entertainment company has gained widespread appeal in recent years with the success of its Santa Fe, N.M., location: the House of Eternal Return that opened in 2016. Earlier in 2021, Meow Wolf opened Omega Mart in Las Vegas, Nevada, and now Denver will host the company’s latest location.

“Denver’s art scene is active and vibrant, making it a perfect place for our next exhibition,” says Chadney Everett, the Executive Creative Director for Meow Wolf Denver. “Convergence Station is Meow Wolf’s third permanent immersive experience, and it will truly change the way you look at art. This exhibition is unlike anything you’ve ever seen … There’s a strong narrative to be uncovered should you choose, alongside truly mind-bending art from the many talented creatives that have worked so hard to bring the vision to life. We can’t wait for everyone to explore.”

Convergence Station has been in the making for three years and over 110 of the 300 creatives that helped bring it to fruition are based in Colorado. The four-story exhibition includes 79 unique installations containing kaleidoscopic cathedrals, Corinthian catacombs, lush alien habitats and other scenes that are straight out of a Hunter S. Thompson bender. But the visually stimulating art is just the beginning of the interactive experience.

The narrative of Convergence Station takes visitors on a cosmic journey where four worlds from different universes have been merged together and all of the resident’s memories have been erased. As guests tour the foreign worlds, memories will serve as both currency and the key to unlocking the answers regarding the mysterious disappearance of four women and the convergence of these worlds. Those who choose to immerse themselves in the storyline will be heading down the Meow Wolf rabbit hole that has lured countless fans at the Santa Fe and Las Vegas locations.

Also located within Convergence Station is HELLOFOOD, a casual cafe featuring an assortment of local food and drink options. Despite being set in another universe, HELLOFOOD was designed with the intention of collaborating with Colorado businesses.

“We started right here in the community as we wanted our cafe to reflect its rich diversity,” says Brian Loo, Senior Director of Operations Development. “We called upon local restaurateurs, craft breweries, coffee roasters and bakeries to collaborate on our menu. The results are exponentially tasty with the vast majority of our offerings made right here in Colorado.”

Rounding out the experience at Convergence Station is a 488-person concert venue called Perplexiplex that will deliver mind-bending live performances. By collaborating with interactive technology and projection specialists, Moment Factory, the venue will be transformed into an immersive space of discovery that will enable guests to interact with the imagery and have projections change before their eyes, based on their movements. Denver-based artist GRiZ is set to perform at the inaugural show at 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 18. While the inaugural show has already sold out, tickets to Convergence Station and future concerts within Perplexiplex can be purchased online through the Meow Wolf website.

Jay McKinney is a Colorado native who recently graduated from Metro State University of Denver with a bachelor’s degree in communications. He loves spending time outdoors, playing golf and hiking.
