Southern Colorado town becoming popular among artists, outdoor enthusiasts

By Steve Graham

Depending on your age and timespan in Colorado, the town of Trinidad might evoke a variety of stereotypes, from a historic massacre to a marijuana mecca.

But all that is changing. Artists and outdoor enthusiasts are checking out the town on the southern Colorado border. The town of about 8,000 people has been so popular this summer that it can be hard to find a hotel room.

And there are some upcoming events that will draw even more visitors.

Mark your calendar for the Artocade, featuring 75 amazing art cars (all the cars pictured above are just a taste of the collection). The parade, the nation’s second largest parade of drivable sculptures and art cars, is at noon Saturday, Sept. 11, in downtown Trinidad. There will be a daylong festival including a 7 p.m. car show on Commercial Street, which will offer a closer look at the art cars and a chance to meet the “cartists.”

What is an art car, you ask? The “Artocadians” only say: "If you can't drive it, it's a float; end of rules."

What else is coming to Trinidad?

  • “The Rainbow Fish” is a children’s production coming to the recently reopened Main Street Live, running Aug. 20 to 29. The former Southern Colorado Repertory Theatre reopened after COVID with a broader variety of entertainment and community events.

  • The next First Friday Art Walk is scheduled for Sept. 3, highlighting the burgeoning arts scene in Trinidad.

  • The first Rad Dirt Fest Gravel Bike and Trail Run is debuting on Oct. 2 and 3, and is expected to draw top athletes from all over the country.

  • There will also be several events this fall to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Santa Fe Trail.

For more on the history of Trinidad, and its growing arts and recreation offerings, check out the September issue of our print magazine. Get a copy at one of these locations, or subscribe and never miss an issue.
