Plan to explore new terrain from a railcar

By Liam Easley

The Rocky Mountains were once a place where mines were abundant, and the best means of transport between towns and mines was by train. Today, many of the railroads are still in use, but instead of transporting workers, they transport tourists. These reconditioned railroads show off some of the best views Colorado has to offer.

Royal Gorge Route Railroad

Originally the result of two warring railroads in the 1870s, the Royal Gorge Railroad is not just a historical site, it’s also bountiful in beauty. The railroad starts in Cañon City before winding around the Royal Gorge, a canyon over 1,200 feet deep that was carved by the Arkansas River. On the train, passengers enjoy beverages, gourmet food options, murder mysteries and, of course, a great view.

Georgetown Loop Railroad

Climbing 600 feet in elevation, the small-gauge tracks of the Georgetown Loop were once known as an “engineering marvel” at the time of its construction. The tracks are wrapped around the mountains and reach over canyons, offering a wide variety of views for the passengers. Along the way, mine tours and gold panning are optional.

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad

Experience one of the most adventuristic railroads in the country. Tiptoeing the edge of the Toltec Gorge and crossing the 10,000 feet of the Cumbres Pass, this railroad spans 64 miles. However, its biggest claim to fame is its appearance in “Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade.”

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Like many of the other railways on this list, the one passing between Durango and Silverton is known for its heights. Travelling 200 feet above the Animas River, the tracks twist around the canyons and peaks of the San Juan Mountains. The tracks pass through the San Juan National Forest where passengers can get off and go hiking or fishing. Unfortunately, the train will be closed for the next two to four months after heavy rains washed away a portion of the tracks.

Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad

There is much more to see on the railroad between the gambling towns of Cripple Creek and Victor than the already grandiose Pikes Peak and Echo Valley; there is also Anaconda, one of four abandoned mining towns in the area. In addition to the spectacular sights, the rail adventure is fully narrated by a tour guide.

Leadville & Southern Railroad

The Leadville Railroad is known for its view during autumn, as the aspen forests around it provide radiant fall colors during that time of the year. During spring and summer, the color comes from the many wildflowers that also populate the route. Beyond plant life, the railway offers great views of Colorado’s tallest two peaks: Mt. Massive and Mt. Elbert.

Rio Grande Scenic Railroad

Of all the activities offered through this railroad, the most unique is the concert venue that is only accessible by train. Outside of the venue, excursions include outstanding views and visiting the town of La Veta. Unfortunately, the railroad will not be running in 2020, but don’t forget to refer to their schedule at the beginning of their 2021 season.

Pikes Peak Cog Railway

Opened in 1891, this historic railway is one of Colorado’s oldest attractions. Not only is it an historic checkpoint for Colorado tourists, it is also one of the highest-climbing railways in the world. While the railway is under construction and is not currently open, there are plans to reopen in May 2021. In the meantime, bus tours are offered to the top of the peak.
