Boulder Beer Co. Marks Pride Month with New Beer

By Tomas Bernal

As Boulder Beer Co. celebrates its 40th anniversary, the LGBTQ community can celebrate Pride Month with a beer that was produced to support equality of all people.

Boulder Beer recently released its Gender Fluid Lager, a German-Style Pilsner, brewed specifically for Pride Month (June). Ten percent of proceeds from the Gender Fluid Lager will be donated to the Human Rights Campaign. Founded in 1980, the Human Rights Campaign is the largest LGBTQ advocacy group in the United States.

“As a nationally distributed brewery, we’re happy to contribute to the Human Rights Campaign, a nationally recognized organization that is working toward equality for all people,” said Dan Weitz, director of sales for Boulder Beer.

According to Charlotte Clymer, LGBTQ activist and press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign, the brewery’s support is timely because transgender people face ongoing challenges.

Boulder Beer has a rich history of supporting philanthropic causes and supporting progressive ideas in conservation and education.

They worked with the Denver Queer Business Alliance and one of its members, the Little Shoes Studios, on “several marketing projects surrounding Gender Fluid to ensure and promote inclusivity,” according to Boulder Beer press release.

The beer can features the gay pride flag behind the words “gender fluid.” Flowing out of the gender fluid text, is the transgender symbol.

The beer carries an earthy aroma, complemented by a slightly hoppy bitterness. It’s a “beer that everyone can take pride in. We certainly do,” Weitz said.

The Gender Fluid Lager’s release party was May 24, but the beer will be released in major markets where Boulder Beer is distributed. Look for 12-ounce six-packs. At a modest 5% ABV, and 25 IBU, the pilsner is an easy-drinking summertime beer.

As part of Pride Month, Denver PrideFest is set for June 15-16 at Civic Center Park downtown. Produced by the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center of Colorado, more than 250,000 people are expected to attend the parade and rally, the third largest in the country.
