Still on Hill offers the best of Breck and tasty spirits

The Breckenridge Craft Spirits Festival kicks off Friday with a host of events to fit all interests. Better known as Still on the Hill, the primary tasting event runs from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the River Walk Center, just off downtown.

But the festival represents more than just three-dozen incredible spirits producers – it has been kicked up another few notches with seminars and workshops. Among the offerings, there is a historic saloon tour, a women-in-distilling seminar, an art of tasting workshop and several others at locations around town. Plan to jump in to one of the experiences from Oct. 21-23. A full list is available here: breckenridgecraftspiritsfestival.com/home

Although all kinds of local spirits will be available, Laws Whiskey House, a Denver distillery that will participate at Still on Hill, offered tips to Thirst Colorado on how to enjoy whiskey. Most of the tips would apply to other spirits as well.

How to taste a spirit for the first time

1. Try a new spirit neat (no ice), embracing its flavor profile.

2. Nose the product slowly with a partially open mouth to awaken your olfactory senses.

3. Take the first sip without analyzing it and roll it around the mouth to stimulate your
taste buds.

4. Let the heat settle and after the palate has become acclimatized then repeat Step 2 and take another sip. Embrace the flavors - especially the finish. Great whiskeys finish long on the palate.

6. Now you are ready to enjoy the whiskey in whatever form you prefer: Neat, with a splash of water, on the rocks or in your favorite cocktail.
