May the Fourth be with Colorado

Star Wars Day Celebrations are on Tap Across Our Galaxy

By Steve Graham

Sure, everyone is geeking out about Game of Thrones and The Avengers, but neither of those nerdy franchises has its own holiday. Inspired by the Jedi catchphrase, May the Fourth has become a universal celebration of the Star Wars universe.

With the big day falling on a Saturday this year, plenty of musicians, breweries and even libraries are getting in on the action. So here is a full schedule of Star Wars Day activities, although you might need the Millennium Falcon to get across the state to attend all of them in one day.

9 a.m. — Kessel Run

The Old Town Library in Fort Collins hosts the annual Kessel Run, a costume contest and non-competitive 5-kilometer run around the library park. With obstacles and activities on each lap of the run, it’s tough to complete the run in 12 parsecs, but the event also includes after-parties at Gryphon Games and Comics (it’s also free comic book day) and the Fort Collins Barnes & Noble. The event is free, but registration is required.

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Space Foundation

The under-rated and always fun Space Foundation Discovery Center in Colorado Springs hosts a Star Wars day event, including a light saber-building workshop, intergalactic games and crafts and a special Imperial planets presentation. Come in your favorite Star Wars costume.

4 p.m. — Bar Crawl

A Star Wars-themed bar crawl runs from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., starting at Larimer Beer Hall, with stops at five other bars with galactic drink specials. Tickets start at $15

7:30 p.m. — Star Wars symphony concert

Thomas Wilson will conduct the Colorado Springs Philharmonic in an evening of John Williams compositions from several different Star Wars movies at the Pikes Peak Center. Tickets cost $31-$80.

8 p.m. — ArtWar

The Curtis Hotel in downtown Denver hosts the fourth annual ArtWar. Wear your costumes for an evening of dancing and galactic drinks from both the Empire and the Rebellion. You will also be surrounded by Star Wars-inspired art by local artists, much of which you can buy. The event is free if you pre-register, but $20 at the door.

9 p.m. — Star Wars Burlesque

Champagne Cabaret is taking the cosplay to the next level with a Star Wars Burlesque show, hosted by MC Bellznwhistlez dressed as C3PO, at the Gold Room in Colorado Springs. Advance tickets cost $15. Door price is $25.
