The newly resurrected Tivoli Brewing Company will be celebrating its first anniversary with a festival of music and beer on Friday, August 12th, in its original historic location on downtown Denver’s Auraria campus. The company was founded by John Good in 1859 and Tivoli beer holds the distinction of being the first to be brewed in what would soon become the great state of Colorado. It operated in its current location for more than a century, and when the brewery doors sadly closed in April of 1969, it stood as the second-oldest continuously operating brewery in the U.S.
The company was brought back to life by 5th generation Denverites Corey and Debbie Marshall who founded the brewery’s sister company, Tivoli Distribution Co., in 2012 and began contract brewing the original Tivoli Helles Lager, which is faithfully re-created using the historic recipe that was handed down to them from the brewmaster who cooked up the final batches of this Colorado staple 43 years prior. Finally, in August of last year, Tivoli beer returned to its rightful home in the beautiful historic landmark building which also serves as a student union and community center for the universities represented on the Auraria campus.
Festivities will kick off promptly at 5 p.m. and will include live music from several in-demand local bands who’ll be performing just outside the brewery’s full-service tap house and restaurant on the campus’s handsome new student quad, which offers an eye-popping panoramic view of the city. Attendees will have ample opportunity to enjoy the offerings of a dozen Front Range craft breweries, all of which are among Tivoli Distribution Company’s portfolio of brands, and burgers and brats will certainly be in good supply.
The celebration happily coincides with this year’s World Brewing Congress and organizers expect a strong showing of industry VIP’s from over 30 countries, who’ll have a chance to tour the new state-of-the-art brewing facilities which are nestled among well-preserved historic equipment, including the massive 250 barrel copper brew kettles suspended in their original positions above the tap room. The venue will serve as a fitting host for these professionals who will no doubt be interested to learn all about Tivoli Brewing Company’s direct partnership with MSU Denver’s brewing and hospitality industry educational programs which offer students a comprehensive hands-on learning experience in the heart our nation’s beeriest city.
General admission to the event will be free-of-charge, but for $25 beer lovers can purchase a tasting glass which will get them unlimited samples from the numerous breweries on hand.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and a healthy thirst as we raise a glass of Colorado’s first beer in honor of a Denver institution reborn.
